“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
Leadership is not a self description. Who cares if you believe yourself to be a leader? If it were that simple, I could say “I’m a millionaire” and “poof” I’d be just that! Leadership is about the perception of your followers. Do you have followers? Would they say you are a leader? Are the characteristics and behaviors you espouse those of leadership? This is where it all begins.

I recently had the opportunity to present "Effective Leadership" at a DePaul event, and we started with this question; What is your motivation for being or becoming a leader? Why do you want this responsibility?
I challenge you to answer this question......

While preparing for an "effective leadership" presentation, I began to boil down what many of the theories would look like in action - it came to these four phrases:
"I need your help"
"I don't know"
"Thank you" and
"I'm sorry"....
As I began to share this concept with friends and peers, every person said that had no problem with three of the four phrases, but there was always one that was difficult for them......which is yours?

Where all think alike, no one thinks very much. Walter Lippmann
Conflict is inevitable -- 85% of employees experience conflict to some degree (typically around 2.8 hours per week.)
Conflict is costly -- at least $359 Billion in paid hours this year.
Above data from: CPP Global Human Capital report; WORKPLACE CONFLICTAND HOW BUSINESSES CAN HARNESS IT TO THRIVE, 2008
The above data speaks to what most people already know: Conflict is common. Perhaps less known is that conflict can be costly. Conflict can create emotions of excitement, sadness, fear, anger or joy.

A virtual learning environment (VLE) is a software system designed to support teaching and learning in an educational setting, as distinct from a Managed Learning Environment, (MLE) where the focus is on management. A VLE will normally work over the Internet and provide a collection of tools such as those for assessment (particularly of types that can be marked automatically, such as multiple choice), communication, uploading of content, return of students' work, peer assessment, administration of student groups, collecting and organizing student grades, questionnaires, tracking tools, etc.
